Infrared Sauna: How Is It Different From a Traditional Sauna?

After a long day, sometimes all you want is a little time to slow down, relax and let your body unwind.
Saunas have been used for relaxation for generations. Today, infrared saunas offer another way to experience heat, with a different feel from the intense warmth of a traditional sauna.
But what exactly is an infrared sauna? Can it help with muscle recovery? Does sweating really detoxify your body or help you lose weight? And is it safe for everyone?
At Samyah Wellness, we believe that making informed choices is an important part of looking after yourself. Here is a closer look at how infrared sauna therapy works, what you can realistically expect and what to keep in mind before your first session.
What Is an Infrared Sauna?
An Infrared Sauna uses infrared light to produce heat. Unlike ultraviolet light, infrared light is experienced primarily as warmth.
A traditional sauna heats the air inside the room, which then warms the body. An Infrared Sauna is designed to warm the body more directly and can generally operate at a lower air temperature. This may make the experience more comfortable for people who find the intense heat of a traditional sauna difficult to tolerate. Mayo Clinic
Infrared Sauna vs Traditional Sauna
Both experiences expose the body to heat and encourage sweating, but they work differently.
Traditional sauna:
- Heats the surrounding air
- Usually operates at a higher temperature
- Creates a more intense hot-room experience
Infrared sauna:
- Uses infrared light to warm the body
- Generally operates at a lower air temperature
- May feel more comfortable and tolerable
- Still causes sweating and an increase in heart rate
Neither option is automatically “better.” The right choice depends on your health, comfort and purpose.
Why Do People Use an Infrared Sauna?
People commonly explore Infrared Sauna Therapy for:
- Relaxation after a demanding day
- Post-workout recovery
- Temporary relief from muscle stiffness
- A gentle heat experience
- Supporting a recovery routine
- Creating time to slow down and unwind
Some early studies have explored sauna use in relation to cardiovascular health, chronic pain and certain long-term conditions. However, much of the available research is limited, and larger, better-designed studies are still required. Mayo Clinic
An Infrared Sauna should not be presented as a medical treatment or a cure for health conditions.
Is Sweating the Same as Detoxification?
The word “detox” is frequently used when discussing saunas, but it can be misleading.
Sweating is primarily the body’s mechanism for regulating temperature. The liver and kidneys perform most of the body’s detoxification and waste-processing functions.
An Infrared Sauna may make you sweat, but it should not be claimed to remove every toxin, cleanse the organs or reverse the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle.
Hydration, nutritious food, regular movement, appropriate sleep and reduced alcohol consumption remain more important for long-term health.
Can an Infrared Sauna Help With Weight Loss?
An Infrared Sauna does not directly burn body fat.
You may weigh slightly less immediately after a session because sweating causes temporary fluid loss. Once you rehydrate, this weight generally returns.
Sauna sessions should not replace exercise or appropriate nutrition. Claims of effortless or permanent weight loss through sweating are misleading. health.clevelandclinic.org
What Does a Session Feel Like?
As the session progresses, you may experience:
- Gradually increasing warmth
- Perspiration
- A temporary increase in heart rate
- Relaxation
- Mild flushing of the skin
- A feeling of looseness in the muscles
You should leave the sauna immediately if you experience dizziness, nausea, weakness, breathing difficulty, chest discomfort, confusion or an unusually rapid heartbeat.
How Long Should a Session Be?
The appropriate duration depends on your experience, health, hydration and tolerance to heat.
Beginners should start with a shorter session and increase the duration only if they remain comfortable. Even experienced users should avoid unnecessarily prolonged heat exposure.
At Samyah Wellness, an Infrared Sauna session may be scheduled for up to approximately 20 minutes, but the duration can be reduced according to the individual’s response.
The goal is comfortable and controlled heat exposure, not testing how long you can tolerate the sauna.
What Happens at Samyah Wellness?
Before beginning:
- Your blood pressure is checked
- The process and safety precautions are explained
- You should disclose medical conditions and medications
- The session duration is selected according to your experience
- You are advised to remain hydrated
The sauna is used in a private setting. You should communicate with the team and exit immediately if you begin to feel uncomfortable or unwell.
After the session, allow yourself to cool down gradually, drink water and avoid moving immediately into intense exercise.
How Should You Prepare?
Before your appointment:
- Drink sufficient water
- Eat appropriately beforehand
- Avoid alcohol
- Avoid arriving immediately after an exhausting workout without cooling down
- Inform the team about medical conditions and medication
- Remove jewellery and electronic devices
- Bring comfortable clothing and a towel
Clients may bring their own towel. A towel can also be provided at Samyah Wellness for ₹50.
After the session, continue hydrating. An electrolyte drink may be helpful if you have perspired heavily.
Who Should Avoid an Infrared Sauna?
Infrared Sauna Therapy may not be suitable for everyone. Medical clearance should be
obtained if you have:
- Heart disease or an irregular heartbeat
- Uncontrolled high or low blood pressure
- A recent heart attack or stroke
- Severe circulation problems
- Kidney disease or fluid restrictions
- A condition that affects normal sweating
- Multiple sclerosis or heat sensitivity
- Epilepsy or a history of seizures
- Diabetes with related complications
- A recent operation or acute injury
- Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
- A current fever, infection or serious illness
- Medication that affects blood pressure, hydration or heat tolerance
Heat exposure can lead to dehydration, dizziness and low blood pressure. Leave the sauna immediately if you feel nauseated, dizzy, weak or unwell.
